What You Need To Know Right Now About How To Rank On Etsy!

While starting up an Etsy store is easy, there are many things that you should take into account before starting to sell your products.

In today’s blog post, we’re going to walk you through some pointers that will help you make the most sales on your Etsy store!

Branding For Your Etsy Store

Yes, branding is very important on Etsy. Take a moment to go check out a few popular Etsy stores. You can see that they have a very clear brand.

Your brand is your promise to your customers. It shows them that they’re going to get a benefit from buying your products.

When thinking of your brand, you need to make sure that the story behind you and your products attract customers. You will want to play on the personal aspect of what you do; you want to make it as authentic as possible. By making your potential customers feel that they have an emotional connection to your products, they’re going to buy from your store rather than another.

Image is another important aspect of your brand. Having a well-designed logo and visuals are key to success.

For your logo, you want to make sure it’s memorable and unique. It should be something that separates you from the other 1000’s of stores on Etsy. Keep watch on our blog, we will have some great tips in regards to designing a great logo in the future!

Researching Your Competitors

While branding can help you stand out from the competition, looking to see what your competitors are doing will be very beneficial.

The first thing you should do to get a better understanding of the market you’re entering is to look at the images, titles, and descriptions that your direct competitors are using. Another important factor is to even look at shipping times and what is the typical delivery dates your competitors are promising!

Once you’ve compiled a list of terms, items, and patterns from your competitors, you can now apply this to your Etsy listings.

We do want to warn that you should not be directly copying verbiage or pictures from your competitors. You should be making your Etsy listing your own.

Etsy SEO

So, you have your brand and you’ve taken a look at what is popular in the market you want to enter. You’re now ready to create your listing!

To ensure that your product is seen and getting in front of potential customers, there are a few things that you need to optimize.

  1. Your Item Title
  2. Tags
  3. Attributes

Your Item Title

Your item title is a factor in the search engine on Etsy, so having a good title is very important!

As you can see, the text starts to get cut off after a certain point. Making sure the most important, descriptive text is at the start of your item title is very important. This will give customers information about your product that they need to know to help them move along their purchase journey.

Additionally, having keywords in your title is very beneficial. As stated before, your item title is one of the factors that help you show up on Etsy. By including descriptive keywords that are relevant to your product, it’ll help you rank further up in Etsy’s search as it will be more relevant to what your customers are looking for.

For example, if we search “Wreaths”, on the first page we have a few listings that come up. Let’s dissect one of them!

As you can see in our example, this wreath Etsy shop is trying to target those looking for a Christmas wreath, holiday wreath, handmade wreath, etc. Due to this, alongside other factors that we will list, it has helped them achieve ranking on the first page due to its relevancy of the search.

Tags

Tags are also a very, very important factor that weighs into your item listing in Etsy’s search engine.

Etsy only allows you to use 13 tags — and you should be using ALL of them. Tags are a way for people to search for your product. Etsy themselves describe it perfectly when they say “one rule of thumb to follow: If you can’t imagine someone typing a phrase into Google, it shouldn’t be in your tags.”

If you’re stuck on keywords, a few things to keep in mind to help you develop great keywords are:

  • The products that you used to create the item
  • How you made your item
  • What style is it (i.e. modern, boho, etc)

Attributes

Attributes are additional descriptors that you can add to your listing. They act like tags and can help your item match with a consumer’s search.

They are descriptive characteristics of your item; they include primary and secondary colour, celebration, occasion, height and width.

Make sure to choose the best attribute that fits with your item.

Free Delivery

Due to high postage costs, Etsy has now prioritized those items and shops that have free delivery. By choosing this option, you are eligible for ‘priority search placement’. In summary, this basically means that your item lists higher when people are searching for the product you’re selling.

To combat this, current Etsy shops have been including the estimated cost of shipping into their listing.

Etsy offers an estimated shipping cost that can be a great tool when trying to figure out how much to raise your listings price.
